When I was writing these prompts I used topics that I thought students in grades 7-10 would enjoy writing about, as well as the inclusion of critical thinking prompts. To this end, prompts touch on a variety of topics. Some that students can relate to personally- such as “What is one trend in music, fashion, or pop culture you dislike” or “Describe someone who has had a big impact on your life”. Broader topics about society and life, for instance their opinion on various quotes or “How would you picture a world without money”. As well, I included engaging creative writing prompts such as “An old letter is found stuck inside a mailbox. It was never sent. Who is the letter for? What does it say?” or “The plane had landed, but where was the pilot? Tell this story”.
I hope these prompts generate creative thought, critical thinking, and interesting writing practice for your students. I have also included a few suggested used for the presentation of these prompts.
Tip: cut out writing prompt squares, laminate, and place in a clear jar. When students finish work early they can select one from the jar and work on it in their notebooks.
