Lead your students to consider major characters by using this graphic organizer that considers the obvious as well as the deeper aspects of characterization. Text evidence is required. Encourage artistic students to illustrate characters. You may use this with individuals, pairs, or cooperative groups. This organizer can be 8 1/2 x 11 or poster size. Poster-sized GOs work well with a gallery walk when groups cover different characters. While this was originally created to work with Shakespeare (thus the line numbers in the instructions), it works with any piece of fiction. Couple with a minilesson on indirect characterization, and you can customize the activity to have students look for text evidence for specific characterization types.
