4.NBT.2 Writing whole numbers in expanded form. I have used this lesson as a review with my fifth graders. The lesson is from the direct instruction format.
The order of slides:
concept development(I do: students watch me model, we do: students do in their math journals then we TPS-think pair share, you do: white board CFU-checking for understanding)
white board check/quick assessment
I have also included a worksheet that I made that has the students show and explain the concept taught in the lesson.
You will also notice that in the vocabulary page, students are given examples and non examples and then given the opportunity to come up with their own definition. I have been doing this for all my lessons and it has made a huge difference in their understanding of vocabulary words. They remember the meaning more so when they have come up with their own definition, rather than to copy a definition given to them. I also use TWPS(Think, Write, Pair, Share) during the vocabulary. This is when they THINK of a definition after seeing the examples and non examples. Then they WRITE what they have came up with in their journals, next with my signal, they PAIR with their partners and read their definitions, and finally I randomly call on a student to SHARE with the class. I usually randomly call on about 3 students before I get volunteers.
Hope you enjoy this lesson as much as I did! I will have more lessons from 4th and 5th grade common core standards coming up soon!
