Reading Standards for Literature - Standard No. 1
- Students are asked to "refer to details and examples in a text" in the deeper level thinking class discussion questions, and they also are asked to draw inferences from the text. On the SCE Worksheet, they must base all their answers on the details of the reading passage.

Reading Standards for Literature - Standard No. 2
- In the study guide comprehension questions, students are asked to "summarize the text." Teachers are given a summary in the teacher's guide. Also, the deeper level thinking class discussion questions assist students in thinking through the point of the story.

Reading Standards for Literature - Standard No. 3
- Through the use of a setting, character, and events worksheet and the Character & Setting Story Prompts, students are asked to “draw on specific details in the text (e.g., a character’s thoughts, words, or actions)” to retell the story.

Reading Standards for Literature - Standard No. 4
- Through the use of the deeper level thinking class discussion, the reading and writing worksheet, and the vocabulary worksheet, students are asked to "determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including those that allude to significant characters found in mythology (e.g. Herculean)."

Writing Standards – Standard No. 1
- Through the use of the Reading and Writing Worksheet, students are asked to write an opinion paragraph on a topic, derived from the reading passage, and support their opinion with personal experience reasons.

Writing Standards - Standard No. 7
- The inquiry questions help students "conduct short research projects that build knowledge through investigation of different aspects of a topic" on a topic related to the story.

Speaking and Listening Standards - Standard No. 2
-The story prompts are a fun and interactive way for students to "paraphrase portions of text" as they retell the story both in the classroom and at home with their families.
