5th Grade CMCR Egyptian Inspired Vase
You and your students will enjoy this lesson that intertwines history, real-world problem solving, and symmetry, literacy and art concepts. This 22 slide PowerPoint comes with interactive slides, hyperlinks, extra resources and extension opportunities.
First, students will collaborate with their partners to develop a rule that they deem essential in today’s society. Once they create their rule, they will learn how to take that rule and rewrite it using Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics. Now you got your class hooked even before the real lesson begins.
From there, students will learn about Egyptians location, geography, climate to get a better feel on why Egyptians drew their figures (people, Queens, Kings, and Gods) a certain way. Students will then strike an Egyptian pose to further enhance their understanding of the Egyptian style for art. Students will then take their knowledge and create a sketch of their Egyptian themed jar. Students will be guide by the teacher on what a successful Egyptian jar would be based on a rubric (attached).
Throughout the lesson, each PowerPoint slide offers tips, background information, as well as lesson pacing tips. Additionally, there are entrance and exit tickets that are aligned with the lessons objective (and of course the Art and Literacy Standards) so that you can gauge the amount of new learning that takes place. Your students will enjoy making their Egyptian vases as they will transfer their rule that they previously written in hieroglyphs onto their Egyptian vases! The only thing missing from this lesson is the teacher!!!
