I have taught 4th grade writing in Texas for nine years, and I don’t know what I would have done without this tool. This tool allowed me to see areas in which students still struggled. Thereby, allowing me to target intervention...and be STAAR READY!
OKAY! HERE’S HOW:
The tool is designed to work like this:
1. Give the cumulative assessment.
2. Chart students' progress. (chart included)
3. Reteach skills as necessary.
4. Give the next assessment (two weeks later).
Notice each assessment builds on the previous assessment—beginning with understanding sentences and sentence structure.
Each assessment assesses each skill in order (making grading quick and easy!) The teacher can quickly see what the student needs re-teaching on any given skill.
The tracking chart will help you track your student’s progress!
Assessments are cumulative--which means the skill will be tested on each assessment!
Remember the goal is to track a student’s success on each skill over a period of time (every two weeks is recommended)
Start using this tool once you have completed a few of the writing objectives (revising and editing).
