Objective: This activity tests students on division with remainders.
Standard: This puzzle is aligned with the following fourth grade common core standard:
CCSS.Math.Content.4.NBT.B.6—Find whole-number quotients and remainders with up to four-digit dividends and one digit divisors, us-ing strategies based on place value, the properties of operations, and/or the relationship between multipli-cation and division.
There are two versions of the puzzle included so you can differentiate amongst different ability levels. One puzzle does not have any numbers listed around the outside of the puzzle, making constructing the grid easier. The second puzzle repeats some of the values on the outside, challenging the students to use their inductive reasoning skills to complete the puzzle and allowing for differentiation amongst ability groups.
Directions: Print out the gameboard on cardstock and have it laminated . Cut out the sixteen pieces and pass them out to individual students or to a group of students. The students must match up the division problem with the whole number quotient or quotient with remainder to complete the 4 x 4 grid.
What has been successful for us is to give points for correctly completing the puzzle, and extra credit points for the first few groups that finish. The Roman numerals are there so that you can quickly check for accuracy.
