A great Christmas themed math activity for students learning addition and subtraction with multiple digits!
Contents: The following printable activity covers this 4th Grade Common Core Standard:
- Fluently add and subtract multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm.
Print out the puzzle, preferably on cardstock, and have them laminated for durability. Cut out the sixteen pieces and pass them out to individual students or to a group of students. The students must match up the subtraction and addition problems with the sum or difference. When correctly completed they will form a 4 x 4 grid. Roman numerals are included on the pieces so that the teacher can quickly check for accuracy.
Ten versions of the puzzle are included for differentiation. The puzzles differ in the number of graphics and not in the addition and subtraction problems. As the number of graphics increases so does the difficulty, as the graphics will not aid the students in constructing the puzzle as much.
I have found these puzzles to be a great tool in my classroom, and have created them for a variety of topics. Students don’t realize that they are solving up to 24 problems when completing them. What has been successful for me is to give points for correctly completing the puzzle, and extra credit points for the first few groups that finish.
