Objective: This activity tests students on whole number multi digit subtraction.
Standard: This puzzle is aligned with the following fourth grade common core standard:
CCSS.Math.Content.4.NBT.B.4—Fluently add and subtract multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm.
There are two versions of the puzzle included so you can differentiate amongst different ability levels. One puzzle does not have any numbers listed around the outside of the puzzle, making constructing the grid easier. The second puzzle repeats some of the values on the outside, challenging the students to use their inductive reasoning skills to complete the puzzle and allowing for differentiation amongst ability groups.
Directions: Print out the gameboard on cardstock and have it laminated . Cut out the sixteen pieces and pass them out to individual students or to a group of students. The students must match up the subtraction problem with the difference to complete the 4 x 4 grid.
What has been successful for us is to give points for correctly completing the puzzle, and extra credit points for the first few groups that finish. The Roman numerals are there so that you can quickly check for accuracy.
