This aligns with 4.NBT.5. The unit was designed for fourth graders, but would work great as a review for fifth graders or enrichment as third graders as well.

Overview:

  • 4 digit by 1 digit multiplication practice
  • practice with the area model, partial products, and algorithm
  • worksheets, games, and activities to practice the skill

WHAT'S INCLUDED?

✅3 MINI LESSONS

This math unit also includes a mini-lesson or interactive notebook page with photos showing you how to help students glue the notes into their notebooks. This gives students something to reference when they get stuck or need help while doing homework at home. Students practice with the area model, finding partial products to find an answer, and the algorithm in the 3 included mini lessons.

✅ 10 1 DIGIT BY 4 DIGIT WORKSHEETS

Students practice 4 digit by 1 digit multiplication word problems, solve 4 digit by 1 digit equations, use the area model, the algorithm, partial products, complete error analysis questions, and more in the ten worksheets provided.

✅EMOJI MATH SORT

This is a sorting activity where students put a smile or a frown emoji on top of each task card. If the answer is correct, a happy smile is put on top of it. If the wrong answer was found, the students put a frown on top of the task card. All task cards focus on 4 digit by 1 digit multiplication.

✅ TASK CARDS

There are 24 emoji themed task cards included. Students will love the theme and you can use these as a SCOOT activity, task cards to play with a game, or hide them around the room for a scavenger hunt. A recording sheet and answer key are included.

✅ BUBBLE GUM MATCHING

Students match up each kid with the correct piece up bubble gum. Every kid is blowing a bubble with a different multiplication equation in it. The bubble gum "blobs" each have an answer. Students work in partners to figure out all of the matches.

✅GAME #1: ANIMAL WORLD GAMEBOARD

You have never seen so many different animals before! Figure out the answer on each task card (multiplication word problems) about each animal to win and make your way across the game board!

✅ GAME #2: BUILD A GARDEN GAME

Each player gets a background to build their garden on. Playing cards and pieces go in the middle. Each time you get an answer correct, you earn a piece for your garden. Chance cards are provided to spice up gameplay. You never know who’s going to win with these included! The first person to finish getting 10 items in their garden! All task cards focus on 4 digit by 1 digit multiplication.

✅ GAME #3: WHOLE CLASS GAME

I call this game "Bucket Filler!". Set up the task cards all around the room for students. Print enough of each task card for every student. Give each student a recording sheet. Let students wander the room and solve each task card. When they solve a card, they bring it to the teacher to be checked. If it's correct, they get to drop the task card in a bucket. At the end of gameplay, the teacher draws names out of the bucket. Those students earn a small prize as a reward (an eraser, a pencil, etc).

✅ GAME #4: RACING GAME

This game is called "Line Them Up!". In the game, students race to see which team can line their cards up in the correct order first. Here are the steps to play. Mix up each set of cards well. Give a set of cards to each team. Start the race. Students find the START card first. They put this down. Once the start card is found, students find the answer to the equation. They continue to “Line Them Up” until they reach the FINISH card. The first team done wins!

It's perfect for students in fourth grade or need remediation in fifth grade with multi-digit multiplication. There is a color and black and white version of each game and activity included.

All games come in color and black and white versions.

Aligns with TEKS 4.4C, 4.4D:

  • represent the product of 2 two-digit numbers using arrays, area models, or equations, including perfect squares through 15 by 15;
  • use strategies and algorithms, including the standard algorithm, to multiply up to a four-digit number by a one-digit number and to multiply a two-digit number by a two-digit number. Strategies may include mental math, partial products, and the commutative, associative, and distributive properties
