Product Description
Area Review Math Mystery Activity - Case of The Abducted Alien. NO PREP! Just print and go! Engage and motivate your Grade 4 students while they practice and review AREA skills. Just print and go, your students will have fun trying to figure which Alien Force Abducted the alien Oblang and which planet they are hiding him on!

Optional VIDEO HOOK available to introduce the activity to your students. This adds a bit of extra excitement and fun to the element. A written story is also included in the PDF file if you do not wish to use the video. CLICK HERE TO VIEW VIDEO HOOK

NEW - Editable Suspects list added to the packet. This way you can change the alien force names and alter the mystery outcome. There are also two alternative pre-made lists you can use instead. This is a great option if your students have already done this mystery story before and you need to change the mystery answer.

There are FIVE clues to crack to solve the case:

Clue 1 - Area with Rectangles and Squares
Clue 2 - Area to determine cost
Clue 3 - Area Missing Side Lengths (with rectangles/squares)
Clue 4 - Area Word Problems (Multiplying by numbers ending in zeroes, and/or numbers 12 or less)
Clue 5 - Area of Complex Figures (two or three rectangles/squares together)

Please note: Customary and metric options included in the download for you to choose your measurement unit preference from.

You will also receive: teacher instructions, a story, suspect list, suspect declaration sheet, answer sheets, and printable awards.

How long will this activity take?
Time to complete will vary anywhere between 30mins - 2 hours or more! It mainly depends on how familiar your students are with the math mystery format, as well as how difficult they find the math skills covered in the particular mystery. Please check the math skills outlined in the clues above to help determine suitability for your class. I highly recommend pacing this activity by giving students one clue at a time. Once the whole class has completed a clue, then move on to the next clue either within the same lesson or the next math session. New math content presented? Make a lesson out of it by modeling the math before diving into the clue. I like to say, "we must learn something new before attempting the next clue." There are lots of ways to implement this activity in your classroom, learn more in the blog post link below: Read Blog Post: Five Easy Ways to use Math Mysteries in your Classroom.
