Excite discussion in your classroom while reinforcing close reading and writing skills through multiple texts, using the following assignments. Compact English Language Arts, Social Studies and Writing with these tools.
You can’t talk about Common Core without hearing term Close Reading. This reading strategy involves students to notice and note details, language and intentions of the author in a text.
In the following Close Reading assignments, the text used are propaganda posters and artwork that are frequented online. Students are encouraged to annotate directly on the images and discuss in small groups about what they find. The role of the teacher is to monitor and guide the students with probing questions or provide reference materials to aide in the discussion.
The assignments are provided in an order that best fits our districts adopted curriculum, Houghton Mifflin History—Social Science. Feel free to alter and adjust as needed.
