This is a lesson that I used with my AIS and Special Education students to break down the concept of teaching about mood and inferencing within a novel. This is a supplemental lesson to assist students with close reading required in Module 1 Unit 2 of the Engage NY curriculum.
Because this is a supplement, it could be used in 2nd grade, 3rd grade, 4th grade, or even 5th or 6th grade for struggling students.
You can use this to differentiate instruction by pre-teaching and re-teaching about how to infer a character's mood or the mood within a novel. Show your administration that you can provide scaffolding within the Common Core modules. With this lesson, you are providing struggling students with extra practice on the same concept as the rest of the students, but are using simpler passages more appropriate for their level.
