Description

This task cards set contains 24 task cards to help your students practice generating, extending, and analyzing patterns. There are a variety of question types which helps prepare students for the types of problems they will encounter on standardized tests. Many cards ask students to describe the patterns in their own way.

These task cards ask students to:

-Extend a pattern and explain the pattern in words

-Determine what a specific numbered figure in a pattern will be if the pattern is extended

-Determine how many of each figure will be used if a pattern continues to a certain point

-Generate a pattern, given numbers or shapes, and explain the pattern in words

-Solve word problems involving patterns

There is a blank recording sheet provided for your students to record their answers. There is also an answer key which can be used by teachers or students to check work. The answer key is formatted exactly the same as the recording sheet to make grading quick and easy.

Ideas for use:

Task cards are great for use with guided math groups, at math centers, as at home activities, for early finishers, or for differentiating in 3rd and 5th grades. You might also find them to be useful as a supplement to those math lessons which have fewer practice problems than others. I love the idea of pulling a few cards here and there from previous used sets of cards to review and keep concepts fresh! Just assign a problem to a group or the whole class.

This was so fun! My students worked with a partner to solve each task card. The directions were clear, the recording sheet was user friendly and the content was appropriate for the skill being studied. Wonderful activity!

Generate a number or shape pattern that follows a given rule. Identify apparent features of the pattern that were not explicit in the rule itself. For example, given the rule “Add 3” and the starting number 1, generate terms in the resulting sequence and observe that the terms appear to alternate between odd and even numbers. Explain informally why the numbers will continue to alternate in this way.
