When many people think of classroom transformations, they think:

“This would take me hours to set up.”

“This is going to cost so much money.”

“This looks so overwhelming.”

“I could never do this!”

What if I told you classroom transformations could be EASY to set up, FUN to implement, and STRESS-FREE?

Let's Start with the Basics...What is a Classroom Transformation?

A room transformation changes your room into a certain setting or theme to engage students in their own learning with rigorous content.

Classroom transformations are possible in EVERY classroom. You don’t have to spend hours of your time setting up a room transformation or spend lots of money to make it SO MUCH FUN!

How to Play

Step 1: Tell your fourth grade class that they are completing a room transformation today and will practice math skills. Students solve math challenges set up around the room. They can be completed in any order and you can choose how many challenges students complete or what time frame they have to meet YOUR needs.

Set-up is quick and easy. Simply print the 10 posters, the math worksheets, and a recording sheet for each student. Place them around your room and you’re ready to begin! Additional door décor, printable hats, name tags, admission tickets, a banner, and more are included if you want to use them!

Step 2: Let 4th graders move around the room and solve each challenge. Each time students solve a math challenge, they go to the teacher to get it checked. Students can work independently, in partners, or in groups. Your choice.

Step 3: When grade 4 students finish all ten challenges (or however many you assign), they win! You can give them the certificate of completion included and the coloring page. I also reward my students with a cool eraser at the end.

Step 4 (OPTIONAL Fast Finisher Activity): Most of the time, there are early finishers. These kiddos get to go around the room and learn fun facts about the theme of the day! No one is ever bored. Choose from 3 different fun fact versions.

  • Digital Scavenger Hunt: Let students "find" the facts on Google Slides
  • Printable Fact Posters: Hang fact posters around the room for students to find
  • QR Codes: Students scan facts on an iPad or similar device to read fun facts

All Math Questions Are 100% Editable:

The PRINT version of the challenges is fully customizable! There are 3 versions included.

  1. Premade Version: The challenges are pre-made for you and are ready to print and go!
  2. 100% Editable Version: The challenges are pre-made for you but you can edit any text on the page! Change the title, the instructions, or the questions so they work best for your classroom.
  3. Blank / Create Your Own Content Version: Each challenge is blank and fully customizable. You can type anything you'd like on each page.

Please note: The digital version and clipart is not editable due to copyright laws.

This aligns with 3rd Grade Texas TEKS:

  • TEKS 3.3D: compose and decompose a fraction a/b with a numerator greater than zero and less than or equal to b as a sum of parts 1/b
  • TEKS 3.3F: represent equivalent fractions with denominators of 2, 3, 4, 6, and 8 using a variety of objects and pictorial models, including number lines
  • TEKS 3.3G: explain that two fractions are equivalent if and only if they are both represented by the same point on the number line or represent the same portion of a same size whole for an area model
  • TEKS 3.3H: compare two fractions having the same numerator or denominator in problems by reasoning about their sizes and justifying the conclusion using symbols, words, objects, and pictorial models
  • TEKS 3.6E: decompose two congruent two-dimensional figures into parts with equal areas and express the area of each part as a unit fraction of the whole and recognize that equal shares of identical wholes need not have the same shape

This aligns with 4th Grade Texas TEKS:

  • TEKS 4.2E: represent decimals, including tenths and hundredths, using concrete and visual models and money
  • TEKS 4.2F: compare and order decimals using concrete and visual models to the hundredths
  • TEKS 4.2G: relate decimals to fractions that name tenths and hundredths
  • TEKS 4.2H: determine the corresponding decimal to the tenths or hundredths place of a specified point on a number line
  • TEKS 4.3A: represent a fraction a/b as a sum of fractions 1/b, where a and b are whole numbers and b > 0, including when a > b
  • TEKS 4.3B: decompose a fraction in more than one way into a sum of fractions with the same denominator using concrete and pictorial models and recording results with symbolic representations
  • TEKS 4.3C: determine if two given fractions are equivalent using a variety of methods
  • TEKS 4.3D: compare two fractions with different numerators and different denominators and represent the comparison using the symbols >, <, or =
  • TEKS 4.3E: represent and solve addition and subtraction of fractions with equal denominators using objects and pictorial models that build to the number line and properties of operations
  • TEKS 4.3F: evaluate the reasonableness of sums and differences of fractions using benchmark fractions 0, 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, and 1, referring to the same whole
  • TEKS 4.3G: represent fractions and decimals to the tenths or hundredths as distances from zero on a number line

This aligns with 5th Grade Texas TEKS:

  • TEKS 5.3I: represent and solve multiplication of a whole number and a fraction that refers to the same whole using objects and pictorial models, including area models

Explain why a fraction 𝘢/𝘣 is equivalent to a fraction (𝘯 × 𝘢)/(𝘯 × 𝘣) by using visual fraction models, with attention to how the number and size of the parts differ even though the two fractions themselves are the same size. Use this principle to recognize and generate equivalent fractions.
Compare two fractions with different numerators and different denominators, e.g., by creating common denominators or numerators, or by comparing to a benchmark fraction such as 1/2. Recognize that comparisons are valid only when the two fractions refer to the same whole. Record the results of comparisons with symbols >, =, or <, and justify the conclusions, e.g., by using a visual fraction model.
Understand a fraction 𝘢/𝘣 with 𝘢 > 1 as a sum of fractions 1/𝘣.
Understand addition and subtraction of fractions as joining and separating parts referring to the same whole.
Decompose a fraction into a sum of fractions with the same denominator in more than one way, recording each decomposition by an equation. Justify decompositions, e.g., by using a visual fraction model. Examples: 3/8 = 1/8 + 1/8 + 1/8; 3/8 = 1/8 + 2/8; 2 1/8 = 1 + 1 + 1/8 = 8/8 + 8/8 + 1/8.
