This product is a STEM project and parts of Project Based Learning, tied together. This is a great start of year project to see what skills your students have mastered, while using real life situations! No planning necessary, just print, and teach! You will need to gather STEM items, if you don't have these already in your classroom.

This STEM activity guides students through the engineering process. This STEM project guides them through the engineering process including the ASK, IMAGINE, PLAN, CREATE, IMPROVE, AND REFLECT components. Your students will create a tower to see how many school books it can hold. They will also use project-based learning skills to purchase a class pet and class supplies. Standards addressed for PBL are: place value, multiplication, division, exponents, and much more.
This is appropriate for upper grade students.
Supplies you will need (flexible, you can remove or add supplies of your own, if you like): straws, newspaper, paper, tape, scissors, cardboard pieces, paper towel roll

Science: Engineering Design and Stability
Technology: I have my students make a video and then upload it to our QR code site. You can also have them create an advertisement on google drawing, create a video, or a social media advertisement.
Engineering: Design and create a tower to hold the most weight.
Mathematics: place value, weight, exponents, division, multiplication.
Students will need to follow these steps in the engineering design process:
ASK - Can you design a tower to hold the most books in your class?
IMAGINE - Brainstorm ideas for the tower
PLAN - Create a detailed design of a tower based on the materials you were given
CREATE - Build the tower
IMPROVE - Improve the design to hold more books
REFLECT and SHARE – Reflect on your tower and share with your classmates what you have created.
