This Soil poster is designed to aide students in understanding that Soil has various properties that help vegetation grow. Soil that allows water to pass through easily would not be conducive fro growing plants whereas soil that absorbs the water and allows the water to pass through slowly would aide in the growth of plants. On that same note, Soil that does not allow water to pass through at all would not be conducive for growing plants either.
The Texas TEK (4.7A) is listed within the poster inlcuding if the TEK is a Readiness or Supporting Standard. The verb and nouns are highlighted in a color other than black.
Students should be read the TEK before the lesson begins. The teacher and the students should discuss the TEK; the students need to understand that the verb is what they have to do once the teacher is finished with the lesson. The nouns include, but are not limited to, the vocabulary contained within the lesson.
Once I created the poster, I used a poster maker to blow-up the original size (8.5 x 11) to a true poster size document. I hung the Soil poster at the front of my class and used this method as the ENGAGE part of my lesson. I allowed students to use the poster as a "cheat" throughout the lesson. Once I was finished with the unit, I took the Soil poster down to begin a new unit.
