The Texas Tornado Spiral Review for Language Arts is a set of daily activities to provide a QUICK review of language arts standards based on the TEKS. These exercises will help student have practice on a variety of basic skills and strategies on a weekly basis to help students be successful writers.

They can be used as a Bellwork/Warm-Up activity, in a Work Station, in a small group intervention time, or as homework. They are a perfect supplement to any Language Arts curriculum as well as Writer’s Workshop. If you do Reader’s/Writer’s Workshop, these activities could be a part of the “Work Station” section of your day.
It’s important that the teacher models how to go through the activities at the beginning of the year. However, students should, eventually, be able to complete the activities independently.

This is a basic explanation of what is included for each day:
Trophy Words Vocabulary (matching)
Trophy Words are a set of vocabulary words that help students have better word choice in their writing. The posters and the Trophy Words program is a separate program. However, you do not need to use the Trophy Words program to use the spiral review. You may just have to give students some help with this section at first. But students could also use a dictionary to help them if you would like to allow that.
Spelling/Word Study Review
This section is a review of grade level spelling patterns from the TEKS, homophones, or frequently misspelled words. We have a Word Study Spelling List with activities in a separate product, but, again this spiral review can be used even if you use your own list of spelling words or do not use a spelling list at all.
Homophones or Analogies (alternates by week)
MENTOR SENTENCE: Invitation to Notice
This is where students write notes about what they notice about the sentence. Our mentor sentences come from the Reading Spiral Review passages.
Trophy Words Vocabulary (fill in the blank)
Paragraph Editing: It’s important for students to have opportunities to find errors in writing and edit those errors. Once a week, students are given a chance to do this.
MENTOR SENTENCE: Label the parts of speech in the sentence.

Revise or Edit Multiple Choice Question: These questions are written in the same format as a STAAR question.

Figurative Language Writing
Score a Composition: This section was designed to give students an opportunity to analyze other students’ writing from your class or past STAAR assessment prompt compositions. They are to write (or talk about) a few good things (Glow) and a few not so good things (Grow) that they saw in the composition. This is definitely a part you will want to guide your students through for a while. We do not provide the composition samples at this time, but you can use your previous student work for this or ask other teachers/administrators for some samples you can use. TEA also has several along with the scoring guide. I like to make a notebook of these to use throughout the year to refer to for various activities.
MENTOR SENTENCE: Invitation to Imitate
BONUS QUICK WRITE PROMPTS: We have also included a section after the spiral review pages that has some “Quick Write” prompts to help students practice thinking about and writing to a prompt. One set of prompts have all five days of the week on one page, so students would cut the prompts apart to glue in their journals. Another set has the prompt at the top and lined paper so students have room to write on the page. You could give students choice between all the prompts or assign a specific one each day. These could also be used in morning meeting or as a “White Board” writing. This is where the students write a quick response on the whiteboard or Smartboard. You could let students write their responses on a large sticky note and put all the responses on the board. The possibilities are endless!
