Product Description
These reading activities were designed to provide a daily spiral review of the reading TEKS. They can be used as a Bellwork activity, in a Work Station, in an intervention small group, or as homework. The passages are not long, as to provide for a quick daily review. It should not be used as a lesson, but instead as a SPIRAL REVIEW of reading standards.

These activities are a perfect supplement to any Reading curriculum as well as Reader’s Workshop. If you do Reader’s/Writer’s Workshop, these activities could be a part of the “Work Station” section of your day.

Below is a basic explanation of each day’s routine.

There is one passage for each week and then four daily questions or prompts to answer each day.


1st Read (Monday)
Students are encouraged to read “closely,” by making notes in the margins as they read. We call this “STOP AND JOT.” This is a very important step and should be MODELED, MODELED, MODELED!
The teacher could read it to the students this day or the students can read it independently or with a partner.
Students answer some basic questions about the text such as author’s purpose, point of view, or main idea and detail questions.

2nd Read (Tuesday)
Students should read the passage again.
Students will answer questions about vocabulary and sometimes text structures.

3rd Read (Wednesday)
Students should read the passage again.
The questions on this day will require the students to “dig a little deeper” into the text. Some of the possible questions might be over inferencing, cause/effect, comparing/contrasting, problem/solution, characters, fact/opinion, or theme.

4th Read (Thursday)
Students should read the passage again.
Students will summarize the text, write their own questions about the text, and answer questions about academic vocabulary.

Another Option: We have also included some more open ended questions and prompts that can be used with your own book or text in place of the passage that is included. There is a set of questions that can be used with any NON-FICTION text and a set of questions that can be used with any FICTION text.

This is a discounted GROWING BUNDLE, so we will be posting each part one six weeks at a time with the complete bundle being finished by February 18. Each part is designed to last six weeks, and so far we have Part 1 in this file.

These are the estimated dates for the release of each of the other parts. We hope to have them completed before these dates, but we will have them ready for sure by these dates:
Part 2: by September 30 (We are running a little behind our original date of Sept. 22, but hope to have Part 2 posted by this week.)

Part 3: by November 3

Part 4: by January 5

Part 5: by February 19
