Are you looking for a rigorous reading benchmark or reading assessment to help prepare your students for state testing? This resource is a comprehensive assessment for the Common Core reading literature and informational standards.
****I wrote this with my 5th graders in mind, but this is definitely applicable to 4th graders. However, I would not suggest this be used for a pre-test for 4th graders. It is better suited as a post-test for 4th grade students.

This reading assessment includes 8 texts to fully assess all the standards and all types of texts. The following texts are included:
- Two Persuasive Speeches (Paired on the same topic.)
- Informational Text
- Fiction Story
- Informational Flyer (Paired with the fiction story.)
- Poem (Paired with the drama.)
There are 27 reading test prep questions in all. The questions are a mixture of multiple choice questions (18) and constructed response questions (9).
Each standard is represented at least one time with several standards represented 2-3 times. Please check the Standards Based Alignment to see which questions assess which standards. Standards are also listed on the answer key page.
This reading assessment resource also includes three optional passage-based writing assessments for those states who assess students’ writing abilities in conjunction with passages. The writing prompts are specific to the texts in the assessment. There are three prompts: one informational, one persuasive, and one narrative.
This benchmark assessment can be given at the beginning of the year as a pre-assessment, in the middle of the year, or at the end of the year to show growth.
Due to the length of this assessment, I would recommend giving it in parts. You could give pages 1-7 first and then 8 through 15 on another day.
To save on copies if you give it multiples times ore are departmentalized, you could run off one class set and then have the students use the answer document found in this pdf.
