THERE ARE MANY WAYS TO RAISE THE AMERICAN FLAG!
This w.i.l.d.l.y. creative NO PREP activity will engage your students in critical thinking, teamwork, creativity, inventiveness and also spark their imaginations. This is a great way to intertwine the celebration of the 4th of July into Science and a bit of Social Studies. The lesson plan has you covered from Purpose-Engage-Explore and Independent/Group Practice. It also gives suggestions of how to take the mini project a step further and create 3D realization of a scenario.
Students will be given 6 task cards with silly and tricky scenarios on them. They feature everything from a shipwreck at the Boston Harbor, to Yankee Doodle crashing his covered wagon. In each scenario the American Flag needs to be raised or displayed and students will use their knowledge of 6 simple machines in order to figure out how to solve the task at hand. Their simple machine knowledge is definitely going to be tested on these not so simple task cards.
Though they may come up with different ways to solve each problem the end result will be the same (The flag will be raised) There is an answer card attached with some very “outlandish” options that at least give you a route if your students are stuck. These are not meant to be entirely realistic. The nature of the machines shouldn’t be compromised, but don’t penalize students for inserting their creativity to make the machines work.
