Informative/Explanatory paper prompt for 4th/5th Grade Text-Based Writing. Written in Florida FSA format, but applicable across multi-state, text based writing standards. Includes cover page, prompt/directions page, 3 independent sources on topic, and an Optional Planning Sheet for students' organization. Students are asked to explain, using details from the sources, what set of conditions led to the sinking of the "unsinkable" Titanic.
Source 1: Provides background on the Titanic and it's construction process.
Source 2: Provides contentions outlying the underlying causes of the sinking.
Source 3: Provides excerpts from surviving passengers speaking of their experiences during the moment the iceberg hit.
Challenge students to utilize sources to create an informative/explanatory paper based on real-life accounts of a historically fascinating event! Written at grade level, with a topic that stimulates interest in historical events!
