This is a chart where students learn about the "big ideas" of any civilization. There are 3 columns: Definition, Real World Example, and Illustration.
The big ideas are: Geography, Economics, Government, Culture, Decline. Other topics you can include are: Religion, Rise, or any other topic you discuss when teaching about civilizations.
I explain the meaning of each term with the students on the board using a Frayer model, where the definition we come up with as a group gets put in the box for each big idea. Then students work together to find the example and an illustration that represents the big idea to them.
This chart can be modified for a specific civilization or civilizations. Example: I use this chart to compare Mayas, Incas, and Aztecs and replace the columns with these titles.
