This activity helps students become fluent adding multiples of 5, up to 100. Students will love filling their doghouses with cute dogs by finding the number that, when added to the number on each house, makes a sum of 100. This activity is very easy to prepare and play.
To prepare: Simply print out the game boards, instructions and dog cards. Laminate. Cut the cards apart. If you would like a chart of the number bonds or a recording sheet, these can also be printed out.
To play: Each of 2-4 players takes a game board. Shuffle the cards and place them in a face down stack. Turn over the top card and place it next to the face down pile—this is the discard pile.
Players take turns either taking the top card in the face down stack or the top card in the discard pile, if there is one.
The player reads the number on the dog card. He/she then looks at his/her dog houses to see if the number can be added to the number on any of the empty houses to make a sum of 100. If the player has a match, he/she says the number sentence (“75 + 25 = 100”) and places the dog card on top of the dog house with the number used to complete the number sentence. If there is no match on the players board, he/she places the card face up on the discard pile. If a player gets a “take 2” special card he/she can take 2 cards on that turn. “Take 3” entitles the player to 3 cards. “Everyone takes 1 card” means all players take a card at the same time. Unused cards are put face up on the discard pile.
When all the cards in the face down stack have been used, shuffle the discard pile and continue playing until one player fills all his/her dog houses.
