5 Common Core Activities for Analyzing Theme and Mood in Movie Clips

The provided 5 Common Core rigorous activities explore the development of themes in popular movie excerpts. The activities draw connections between language/rhetoric and the development of theme and explore the development of multiple themes in a film excerpt. The activities are tied to the Common Core standards RI2, RL2, RI4, RL4, SL2, SL3. Four of the video clips are on the main file, and the remaining activity is on the preview file. The activities focus on theme and its connection with the development of mood/tone in the excerpts. The activities include a teacher answer key to assist you in your guided feedback to students. The video clips from each movie have been edited to focus on the key scene(s) that show how the theme and mood/tone are developed. The movie clips are in an .AVI format so they can be played on almost any video player, computer, and tablet. The video is embedded on each page of the Word document so that you do not have to look for the movie clip. Students will answer the following questions for each of the 5 movie excerpts:

1. What is the universal theme or message that the viewer understands from in the film excerpt?
2. How is rhetoric or language used to develop the themes of the clip?
3. How is the theme introduced in the film clip by specific plot details? How is the theme developed over the course of the film clip?
4. What connection, if any, exists between the developed theme and the tone of the movie clip?

The movie clips are edited from the following 5 popular movie titles:
• Braveheart
• The Patriot
• Glory
• The Blind Side
• Men of Honor
