The provided 5 Common Core rigorous activities explore development of plot structure, tone, theme, and character development in popular movie trailers from 2013-2014. The activities are tied to the Common Core standards RL2, RL3, RL4, RL5, SL2, and SL3. The activities focus on the analysis of how authors develop plot structure (foreshadowing, flashback, suspense, humor, and mystery), tone, theme, and complex characters in movie trailers. The activities include a teacher answer key to assist you in your guided feedback to students. The movie trailers are in an .AVI format so they can be played on almost any video player, computer, and tablet. The preview file is a YouTube link only because it cannot be more than 5mb. The full document contains the video files for each movie trailer including the file for the movie used for the preview file. The video is embedded on each page of the Word document so that you do not have to look for the movie clip. Students will answer the following questions for each of the 5 movie trailers:
1. How does the complex character (hero/heroine) develop over the course of the movie trailer? (RL3)
2. How does the movie trailer manipulate time using foreshadowing and/or flashback? (RL3)
3. What are the tones of the movie trailer? (RL4)
4. How do language, music, and cinematography in the clip develop a tone for the viewer? (RL4)
5. How does the music and cinematography in the trailer build suspense, mystery, tension, or humor for the viewer? (RL5)
6. How is the theme of the movie trailer introduced and developed? (RL2)
The trailers are from the following 5 popular movie titles:
• Annie (2014)
• 12 Years A Slave (2013)
• Captain Phillips (2013)
• Captain America 2 – The Winter Soldier (2014)
• Fruitvale Station (2013)
