About SNAPs Lab Stations Activities
SNAPs Lab Stations Activities require students to use science, math, literacy, problem-solving and engineering skills. They are designed to enhance students' understanding of scientific concepts and help students apply scientific ideas to the real world. Each station activity promotes skills so to develop students into proficient and competent scientific thinkers.

SNAPs lab activities have five components:
Science Skills Station to develop science skill proficiency
Narrative Station to build science literacy
Assessment Station to evaluate learning and understanding
Problem-Solving Station to foster engineering design
Synthesis/Summary Project to inspire higher-order learning

A description of the activities at each station in this particular lab is detailed below.

Next Generation Science Standards
This laboratory satisfies NGSS 5-ESS1-1. It combines the three dimensions of science learning - science and engineering practices, disciplinary core ideas and crosscutting concepts - in order to meet the standard. This laboratory also makes interdisciplinary connections to STEM, Math CCSS and ELA CCSS to build the appropriate skills.

Stars Lab Stations Activity Learning Objectives
1. Compare and contrast main sequence stars, Red Giants, Supergiants and White Dwarfs.
2. Interpret data to describe the relationship between the apparent brightness of a star and its distance from Earth.
3. Reflect on factors other than distance from Earth that influence the brightness of stars in the sky.
4. Utilize problem-solving skills to determine if a glowing object in space is a star.

Science Skills Station
Students will complete a graphing activity at this station to study the relationship between the apparent brightness of a star and its distance from Earth. Students will analyze and interpret the data so to better understand this relationship. Students will make inferences about outliers in the data so to consider additional factors that influence how distant stars appear to observers on Earth.

Narrative Station
Students will read an informational text about four major types of stars. Students will also watch a video about why stars glow and the difference between the true and apparent brightness of stars.

Assessment Station
At this station, students will answer questions about key terms and ideas relating to stars. Students will have to employ lower, mid and higher order thinking skills to answer these questions.

Problem-Solving Station
Students will watch a video to learn problem-solving techniques that allow an observer on Earth to determine if a glowing object in the sky is a star or a planet. Students will then use these techniques to classify four different celestial objects in the sky as a planet or star.

Synthesis/Summary Project
Students will have a choice of 11 projects. Refer to the SNAPs Lab Stations Best Practices and Setup Guide for directions and suggestions on how to conduct the project.
