About SNAPs Lab Stations Activities
SNAPs Lab Stations Activities require students to use science, math, literacy, problem-solving and engineering skills. They are designed to enhance students' understanding of scientific concepts and help students apply scientific ideas to the real world. Each station activity promotes skills so to develop students into proficient and competent scientific thinkers.

SNAPs lab activities have five components:
Science Skills Station to develop science skill proficiency
Narrative Station to build science literacy
Assessment Station to evaluate learning and understanding
Problem-Solving Station to foster engineering design
Synthesis/Summary Project to inspire higher-order learning

A description of the activities at each station in this particular lab is detailed below.

Next Generation Science Standards
This laboratory satisfies NGSS 5-ESS1-2. It combines the three dimensions of science learning - science and engineering practices, disciplinary core ideas and crosscutting concepts - in order to meet the standard. This laboratory also makes interdisciplinary connections to STEM, Math CCSS and ELA CCSS to build the appropriate skills.

Shadows and Day Length Lab Learning Objectives
1. Identify patterns in the duration of daylight during the year.
2. Relate the duration of daylight to the change of seasons.
3. Describe the sun’s apparent path across the sky.
4. Illustrate daily shadow patterns.

Science Skills Station
Students will graph the amount of daily sunlight for a location for each month of the year. Students will make inferences about how the amount of daily sunlight influences the weather of a location. Students will also sequence photos of the shadow cast by a stationary block so to show how shadows change throughout the day.

Narrative Station
Students will read about how and why the sun moves across the sky during the day and the shadow patterns that result from this motion. They will also read about how and why the duration of sunlight changes from day to day over the year.

Assessment Station
At this station, students will answer questions about key terms and ideas relating to shadows and the duration of daylight. Students will have to employ lower, mid and higher order thinking skills to answer these questions.

Problem-Solving Station
Students will design a solar power farm. Students will consider changes in the duration of daytime, the motion of the sun across the sky and shadows in the design and position of solar panels.

Synthesis/Summary Project
Students will have a choice of 11 projects. Refer to the SNAPs Lab Stations Best Practices and Setup Guide for directions and suggestions on how to conduct the project.
