About SNAPs Lab Stations Activities
SNAPs Lab Stations Activities require students to use science, math, literacy, problem-solving and engineering skills. They are designed to enhance students' understanding of scientific concepts and help students apply scientific ideas to the real world. Each station activity promotes skills so to develop students into proficient and competent scientific thinkers.

SNAPs lab activities have five components:
Science Skills Station to develop science skill proficiency
Narrative Station to build science literacy
Assessment Station to evaluate learning and understanding
Problem-Solving Station to foster engineering design
Synthesis/Summary Project to inspire higher-order learning

A description of the activities at each station in this particular lab is detailed below.

Next Generation Science Standards
This laboratory partially satisfies NGSS 5-ESS3-1. It combines the three dimensions of science learning - science and engineering practices, disciplinary core ideas and crosscutting concepts - in order to meet the standard. This laboratory also makes interdisciplinary connections to STEM, Math CCSS and ELA CCSS to build the appropriate skills.

Human Activities and Negative Impact Lab Activity Learning Objectives
1. Discuss how human activities (domestication, agriculture, mining, manufacturing and urbanization) enable us to manipulate Earth’s resources.
2. Discuss how humans activities impact natural environments (destruction of habitats, depletion of resources, pollution, loss of species).

Science Skills Station
Students will investigate five significant ways we manipulate and use those resources. Students will investigate the consequences (with a focus on four negative consequences) to the environment as a result of our use and manipulation of those resources.

Narrative Station
Students will read two information texts at this station. The first text discusses human activities that have a major impact on the environment. The second text discusses the negative impacts those activities have on the environment.

Assessment Station
At this station, students will answer questions about key terms and ideas relating to Earth’s resources, how we use Earth’s resources and our impact on Earth as a result of our use of those resources. Students will have to employ lower, mid and higher order thinking skills to answer these questions.

Problem-Solving Station
Students will identify the problem(s) associated one human activity (agriculture, domesticating animals, manufacturing, mining or urbanization). They will research solution to the problem(s) and problem-solve ways to reduce, eliminate or counteract the problem(s). Then they will assess the cost, benefit and practicality in solving the problem(s).

Synthesis/Summary Project
Students will have a choice of 11 projects. Refer to the SNAPs Lab Stations Best Practices and Setup Guide for directions and suggestions on how to conduct the project.
