Objective: Students will be able to understand key elements of a map by creating a map that includes symbols, borders, landforms, and a key. Students will learn to read any type of map using the 5 essential features of a map.
Big Idea: Every map looks different, but if you understand the 5 key elements of a map, you can read and understand any map.
I used this as a review for my 7th grade US history class. It takes 1 class period (can be shortened) and is everything a student needs to know in order to read any map. PLUS, students love using colored pencils, being artistic and using creativity.
This lesson includes everything you need, materials are minimal, and there is even a script for the teacher. No brainer.
