Retelling a text is tough! Make it a little more concrete with a 5-Five Finger Retell. Children use their fingers to count, add, subtract, and read...why not use those fingers to provide structure to a retelling! Students start with a closed fist and and start with their thumb, pointer finger, middle finger, and so on until their hand is open. All of those pieces of the retell whisper, or give clues, to the bigger picture...the theme/lesson or central message!
