In any classroom it’s essential to get students’ brains into learning mode straight away, but this is sometimes difficult to do, particularly in an EFL setting when “learning mode” involves switching into another language entirely! One of the best ways to do this is with old fashioned conversation.

This Daily Warm-up package includes:

• Five news articles, each in a color and black & white version. Each article in the package has been carefully screened to be between 500L and 590L level of text complexity.
• Six speaking prompts for each article, one from each of the six levels of the Revised Bloom’s Taxonomy. Choose the ones that are appropriate for your students.
• The College and Career Readiness Anchor standards (CCR) from the Common Core met by each of the warm-ups, should you choose to use these materials with native English speakers in the United States.
• A short vocabulary-building exercise to enhance text comprehension.

To maximize each warm-up's effectiveness, the text complexity of these articles should be approximately 80% of your students’ Lexile level (or about 700L).

The full-color version of each article is perfect for uploading to a learning management system such as Moodle or Blackboard, or for projecting on a screen at the front of your classroom.

The black & white version can be easily photocopied and distributed for use by each student in class.

The recommended time for each warm-up is no more than fifteen to twenty minutes depending on your class length. You can control the time by selecting which discussion questions the students will answer. The remaining questions can also be assigned for short-answer written homework.
