About SNAPs Lab Stations Activities
SNAPs Lab Stations Activities require students to use science, math, literacy, problem-solving and engineering skills. They are designed to enhance students' understanding of scientific concepts and help students apply scientific ideas to the real world. Each station activity promotes skills so to develop students into proficient and competent scientific thinkers.

SNAPs lab activities have five components:
Science Skills Station to develop science skill proficiency
Narrative Station to build science literacy
Assessment Station to evaluate learning and understanding
Problem-Solving Station to foster engineering design
Synthesis/Summary Project to inspire higher-order learning

A description of the activities at each station in this particular lab is detailed below.

Next Generation Science Standards
This laboratory satisfies NGSS 5-PS1-1. It combines the three dimensions of science learning - science and engineering practices, disciplinary core ideas and crosscutting concepts - in order to meet the standard. This laboratory also makes interdisciplinary connections to STEM, Math CCSS and ELA CCSS to build the appropriate skills.

States of Matter Lab Stations Activity Learning Objectives
1. Describe the arrangement and movement of particles of matter (atoms) in a solid, liquid and gas.
2. Compare and contrast the three major states of matter (solid, liquid and gas).
3. Build a model that represents the structure of matter as a solid, liquid or gas.

Science Skills Station
Students will make observations about solids, liquids and gases at this station. They will compare and contrast the mass, volume and shape of matter for solids, liquids and gases to better understand how atoms make up the different states of matter.

Narrative Station
At this station, students will read an informational text about matter and the three states of matter. They will also evaluate illustrations that show the arrangement of atoms in a solid, liquid and gas.

Assessment Station
At this station, students will answer questions about key terms and ideas relating to the states of matter. Students will have to employ lower, mid and higher order thinking skills to answer these questions.

Problem-Solving Station
At this station, students will build a model that represents a solid, liquid and gas. Students will use arts and crafts supplies to show how the particles of matter are arranged differently in a solid, liquid and gas.

Synthesis/Summary Project
Students will have a choice of 11 projects. Refer to the SNAPs Lab Stations Best Practices and Setup Guide for directions and suggestions on how to conduct the project.

Scale, Graduated Cylinder and Magnifying Glass
2 Beakers and 1 Petri Dish
Disposable Plastic Dish (1 per group)
Magnifying glass
Sugar cubes (1 per group)
Round balloons (1 per group)
Elongated balloons (1 per group)
Water
Cardstock or heavy paper (1 per group)
Pom-Poms, Buttons, M&Ms or other objects that could represent particles of matter (atoms)
Glue
