This offering is a five puzzle package of puzzles involving either O. Henry (William Sydney Porter) or his short story The Gift of the Magi. Included are a vocabulary/matching puzzle from The Gift of the Magi. There is a short story search on finding 16 short stories that O. Henry wrote over the years. There's a Verb Search wherein the student searches for 18 of the verbs that O. Henry used in The Gift of the Magi. I DO give very brief definitions of all of the verbs I've asked the "doer" to find. And there's a crossword puzzle that would provide a nice look back at The Gift of the Magi. The clues on The Gift of the Magi are not deep at all, but the puzzle WILL be enough to force some thinking. My solution page also explains some of my more "uncommon" answers. For younger students it might be best to work the puzzle in pairs or groups. It's intended to generate a challenge while providing some fun. Learning some new vocabulary is always a goal of mine in my crosswords. Remember! The point of a crossword is to have a little fun/challenge while you are learning something. You are not supposed to know each answer right away upon glancing at the clue. It would be no fun if you did. You’d have LEARNED nothing. (This is a message that might be imparted to your students.) I try to phrase enough of the clues so that a student/person will know many of the answers immediately . . . the rest of the clues I want to challenge the doer a little bit. When they’ve learned something through being challenged they’ll appreciate their accomplishment, and the experience, a lot more.
