1. Y is a consonant when it is the first letter of a word or in a syllable -- yes & beyond
2. Y is silent letter when it follows the vowels E or A-- key & day
3. Y takes the long I sound at the end of a one syllable word, is the only vowel and falls at the end of a word, or when followed by a consonant + silent e--type & fly
4.Y has the short I sound when it is in the middle of word or when it is the only vowel in a syllable and is followed by consonants --myth & crypt
5. Y has the Long E sound when it is at the end of a word in the place of the Silent E--baby & funny
The game, sorts, and posters can all be used in large group setting- mini lessons, introductions, or interactive activities; small groups or guided reading situations; seat work-assessments, or in literacy centers.
**Note: The words used in this packet: include a variety of difficulties and essential phonetic skills including: blends, two-letter digraphs, short and long vowels sounds, silent e, adjacent vowels, soft and hard C and G sounds, bossy R, pig pens, and the 5 rules of Y.
