I use this during center time with a parent. I used a real pumpkin and cut the top off. Students write down what the observe and the parent assists. I give them pumpkin seeds or pumpkin chocolate chip cookies to eat.
My kindergarteners had a difficult time DESCRIBING what they saw and I had to give them options: it is big or small, sphere or rectangle, empty or full, etc. Otherwise the responses were: what does it look like - a pumpkin, what does it feel like - a pumpkin, what does it sound like - well, you get it!
For the "sound like", I had them knock on the pumpkin.
