This document has two variations of the rubric. One includes a description of "I" statements to help students know how many stars to award themselves. The second variation includes only the titles related to how many stars - for example "Excellent Effort."
How I use this document:
I cut out the charts, attached them to colored paper, and laminated them. As a reading teacher, I have many groups of students. As I go over the objective for each lesson, I also set my expectations. I ask students what they need to do to get 4 or 5 stars and be in the green. After each group, I ask students to rate their effort before they leave. If any student says they earned less than 4 stars, we discuss what they could do better next time. In doing this, students learn how to take responsibility for their learning.
