In the past year, I have started doing math centers. I have followed the Debbie Diller method, where I have 5 types of centers: Number Sense, Addition/ Subtraction, Geometry, Place Value, and Measurement. I have loved it! Plus, I teach thematic units in my first grade class. So, this year I am working on more math centers that go along with my thematic units. My absolute favorite children's author is Eric Carle. My class does an author study at the beginning of the year. To go along with this author study, I have included:
*Brown Bear Sorting and Classifying: Students will sort the characters by their number of legs. They will then count the number of legs for all the characters. I have included large, full-color cards to complete this activity as a whole class. I have also included a sheet of smaller, black & white cards and a sorting printable for students to complete the activity independently.
*10 Little Rubber Ducks: Students will match numbers and number words labeled on cute yellow duck cards. I have also included a cut & paste printable for students to practice matching numbers & number words.
*Rooster's Off to See the World: Students will use the character cards to solve addition problems. They will also use the cards to add the total number of characters in the story. I have included a set of colorful cards for use in a whole class activity, plus a page of black & white cards to print for each student.
*Character Pattern Block Cards: Students will use pattern blocks to build some of the animals from Eric Carle's stories.
*Character Measurement Cards: Students will measure Eric Carle characters using nonstandard units of measurement. I have included 2 sheets for use with either Unifix cubes or paper clips.
