Product Description
This resource comes with printable cards with suggestions for whos, whats, where, and whens that your students can use to create stories. There are 30 cards for each W.

Simply print, cut the cards out, and laminate to use over and over. I have used these several times with classes ranging from Grade 4-9. I like to pull out the cards every few weeks, or leave them with a sub as an easy writing activity when I am away, as I don’t have to do any prep once they are already laminated.

• Tell your students to pretend to be members of a newspaper staff, and you are their editor. Assign each student a story to report on at random, using the coloured cards. Have each student pick one card of each colour to make up the base of his or her story (they each have to fill in the why for their story).

• Write a news story (as above), and present it to the class as a scripted newscast (along with witnesses and costumes and an "in-field" reporter).

• Write a short story using the coloured cards as a basis.

• Use the cards as a basis for biographical writing. Students write the biography of the “who” they receive, using the what as their subject’s main claim to fame.

• Put the cards in a literacy centre to spark ideas for creative writing.
