Parents / guardians and teachers often express concern that students do not read, do not read enough, or do not read what may be considered good literature. I have included a list of 50+ novels that may help students develop an appreciation for literature, increase their vocabulary, recognise good writing, identify themes, connect with characters, develop sensitivity, broaden their horizons, and foster a lifelong love of reading for pleasure.
As always, before recommending any novel to students, it is advisable to first read the novel yourself. Make sure that it is appropriate for your students. You are a professional. Use your professional judgment. Some novels are appropriate for all ages, some are more challenging and appropriate only for older students. Be advised that some novels may contain mature language/subject matter. Make certain that the novel is approved by your department head/ principal/ school board.
Also, this compilation is by no means a definitive list of ALL THE BEST NOVELS EVER WRITTEN. It is a subjective list comprised of some novels that I think are worth a look. As you well know, there are MANY more CLASSIC NOVELS that deserve consideration.
