Based on the work of Dr. Eric Jensen, this 205-slide power point presentation contains 50 days worth of 5-minute working memory activities that are fun and engaging. Each activity is preceded by a slide with directions for partners (all activities are intended to be done in pairs) and turn taking. Spend just 10 minutes a day (you can use these as a sponge, during an advisory class or homeroom, or as needed) for 50 days and watch your students improve! Research shows that optimal effect is 10-14 minutes/day, 3-5 days/week. The effect size for elementary students is 1.41 and on middle school students is 0.72 - 1.18 (meta-analysis, Jensen 2016).
The last slide has reflection questions for students to consider after completing all 50 lessons. Mental activities and brain builders include: ordering numbers, spelling backwards, arranging word sets. the Stroop effect, and attending to details by finding differences.
Answer keys for the letter scrambles are included in the "notes" of the slides.
