Students will be able to select a main message in a text and explain how the main message is supported by clues (details) from the text.
The cards can be used as presentation pieces. Each student, or a pair of students can share the main message from one of the cards. Students will be able to summarize, distinguishing the clues (details) from the main message in a logical order using pertinent descriptions, facts, and details to support the main messages in the informational texts. While presenting, students will discover important presentation skills such as appropriate eye contact, adequate volume, and clear pronunciation.
Each task card includes an informational text on an educational topic relevant to the academic, social and life skills students need to acquire in the 5th and 6th grades. Topics include:
5th and 6th grade math: techniques on how to solve multiplicative equations
science: the invention of the battery and the magnetic field
health: vitamins and their benefits
physical education: archery
American history: American state history; the state of Virginia, African American poet Phillis Wheatley and the American flag
American geography: Tampa Bay, Florida, Alaska, Hawaii, New York state
American presidents: George Washington and Ronald Reagan
Christmas and Easter history
World Literature: The literary work of Heidi by Swiss author, Johanna Spyri
Drama: The biography of American actress, Shirley Temple
Great for Reading Strategy Centers, Test Prep, and Fast Finishers.
Just laminate the task cards and you're ready to go!
Answer sheets make this activity great for fast finishers as students can practice their writing skills as well as strengthening their reading for meaning skills as they determine the main message of an informational text.
Answer keys included for you to quickly take up task sheets with individual students or the class as a whole.
Task cards can be used in a variety of ways:
• In a center / centers
• In a small group / small groups
• Set up around the room for students to walk around and write their answers on the answer sheet / recording sheet
• Scavenger Hunt style. Students have to look around the classroom to find the cards and answer the questions
• In groups. Groups get a certain amount of time to answer the questions on the task cards and then pass the questions to the next group
• A game of Scoot
