### PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

5.NBT.7- Dissecting Decimal Multiplication: Multiplying Whole numbers and decimals

Purpose: This activity gives students multiple opportunities to make connections between various representations of multiplication with whole numbers and decimals (models, partial products, related facts, and multiplying with words). An emphasis is placed on multiple representations, not an abundance of rote practice.

Various Ways to use: Use the cards and student record sheets in this pack in a variety of ways. Use one card a day for 20 days of practice!

Teacher Prep: Decide which record sheet you want to use, and print them front and back ( this gives students two equations per activity session). Print off the task cards and cut them out. You and your students may find the posters and examples helpful- print those off too!

How to Use:
1- Use the methods for multiplying decimals and whole numbers as whole/small group instruction. Four methods are discussed ( see included posters for more info). Teach each method in consecutive lessons, making note to connect each method to the one before. Use the student record sheets labeled 1-4 for these lessons. Students can extend the lesson by practicing in partners or individual with an additional record sheet and a new equation.

2- If students are familiar with all 4 methods of multiplying decimals, then use student record sheet 5 to help them connect the math between the various representations. This can be completed independently, in partners, or perhaps as a “walk the room” activity.

Walk the room: Place 4 signs (included) around the room, labeled Picture, Partial Product, Solve with Words, and Related Facts. Each student has a record sheet. Divide students into 4 groups and give each group an equation to solve. One your signal, students move from one station to the next, solving using the method indicated by the station’s sign. Students rotate until they’ve solved all four ways.
