This project allows the students to show off their knowldege of
5.NF.2 solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions referring to the same whole, including cases of unlike denominators
5.NF.6 solve real world problems involving multiplication of fractions and mixed numbers by using visual fraction models or equations to represent the problem
Through this project the students will design three ice skating rinks using cuisenaire rods. First they have to figure out the fractional value of the rods they are given. Second they will design the rinks using the rods. After they have designed the rinks they will find the area of their rink (multiply fractions) and then the perimeter (adding mixed numbers).
Finally the students will write a persuasive paragraph to persuade the reader to build the rink they think would work the best.
