This is a great Christmas activity for students learning to convert between US Customary length units.
Objective: This activity tests students on converting between the different U.S. Customary Length Units: feet, inches, yards, and miles.
Standard: This puzzle is aligned with the following fifth grade common core standard:
CCSS.Math.Content.5.MD.A.1—Convert among different sized standard measurement units within a given measurement system.
To complete the puzzle the students must match up the equivalent length units. For example, one piece will say 1 ft on one side so the student will match it up with the piece that says 12 in.
Ten versions of the puzzle are included, each with a varying number of Christmas graphics. One puzzle contains 1 graphic, three puzzles contain 4 graphics, three contain 9 graphics, and three contain a graphic on each individual piece. As the number of graphics increases, so does the difficulty allowing for differentiation amongst ability groups. The puzzles vary in the graphics and not the conversion problems.
Directions: Print out the gameboard on cardstock and have it laminated . Cut out the sixteen pieces and pass them out to individual students or to a group of students. The students must match up the equivalent units to complete the 4 x 4 Grid. There are two versions of the puzzle included.
What has been successful for us is to give points for correctly completing the puzzle, and extra credit points for the first few groups that finish. The Roman numerals are there so that you can quickly check for accuracy.
