This is an ideal activity for end of the year review with multiplication of decimals, or as a step up lesson for preparation for the beginning of sixth grade.
Objective: This activity tests students on multiplying decimals up to the hundredths place.
Standard: This puzzle is aligned with the following fifth grade common core standard:
CCSS.Math.Content.5.NBT.B.7—Add, subtract, multiply , and divide decimals to hundredths, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method and explain the reasoning used.
Included are nine versions of a 4 x 4 multiplying decimals puzzle. To complete the puzzle the students must match up the multiplication problem with its corresponding product. Three of the puzzles contain four end of year/summer season graphics, three contain nine, and three contain a graphic on each puzzle piece. As the number of graphics increases, so does the difficulty as it doesn't aid the students in construction of the puzzle. The different versions allow for differentiation amongst ability groups. The puzzles differ in the number of graphics and not in the multiplication problems.
Directions: Print out the gameboard on cardstock and have it laminated. Cut out the sixteen pieces and pass them out to individual students or to a group of students. The students must match up the multiplication problem with the product to complete the 4 x 4 grid.
What has been successful for us is to give points for correctly completing the puzzle, and extra credit points for the first few groups that finish. The Roman numerals are there so that you can quickly check for accuracy.
