My district asked us to use our Science books as a tool to help students access text. The emphasis, they said, should be on finding the information, not the information itself. This was difficult for many of us to swallow and the resources we were given did not begin to serve this purpose. Hence, I created Student Journals to go along with Macmillan-McGraw Hill lessons. Students are asked to find and synthesize information from text and record it using various means in their journals. I have used the strategy whole class, small group, as a center, and even as homework. Students enjoy looking for information and are definitely more engaged.
