CAREFULLY CRAFTED READING PASSAGES

Each passage falls within the Lexile level of 770-980, which is the Common Core Standards expectation for 5th grade. The Lexile level is marked at the top of each passage.

WHAT STANDARDS IS THIS ALIGNED TO?

This product is most closely aligned to the Common Core standards. However, everything is referenced as “learning targets” so that it is applicable within any 5th grade classroom. There are two options in this download. You can choose to either use a version that makes references to Common Core or a version that does NOT make references to Common Core. The content is the same in both files, but this option gives Common Core schools a specific reference to the corresponding standard, which may be helpful.

NOTE

The Common Core standards consider 4th and 5th grade level texts within the same Lexile level band of 770-980. That means I use many (about 70%) of the same texts in both the 4th and 5th grade products. I only modify the passages slightly for text complexity and to better match the specific grade level standards. However, you will see that the questions and tasks on each of these grade level products are completely different and aligned to that grade level’s standards. If a 5th grade teacher is looking for something to differentiate for lower level readers, I suggest my 3rd grade pack.
