Have you ever stressed about spiraling in all the standards your students need to know by years end? I did. It seemed as soon as a standard was taught and assessed, it seemed studnet's forgot it the next time I came back to it. That's why I spent a year creating this ELA spiral review program that gives students the ooportunity to learn and practice the Common Core Power Standard in a variety of ways. Students practice the 14 most tested standards for 5th grade in a 7 different standards/ twice a week format. They write their responses to each section in their journals and assess learning as a class or in small groups. Standards covered are appositives/sentence combining, quotation marks/editing, capitalization, transitional words/ subordinate conjunctions, sentence revision, fact & and opinion, independent/dependent clauses, synonym/antonym, Greek, French, Latin roots, multi-meaning words, figurative language, prepositional phrases/adverbs, deleting/consolidating/rearranging text, and easily confused words. The format of the questions changes throughout the year to address the various ways they may be asked. Program is used currently with an overhead projector or ELMO, but pages can also be copied and given to students as independent worksheets. Students write responses in their ELA journals in pencil and then when timer sounds, are called up to correct responses on ELMO and again in red pen in their journals. Test scores have been fantastic since I created the spiral review program six years ago! Greatest growth has been demonstrated on the end-of-year state tests because of the high levels of understanding attained by this point in the year. 5th grade is a twice weekly 40 week program with week one, answer guide, then week two, answer guide format. Preview sheets are in Word Format and have been modified slightly to fit the document. Day 2 follows Day 1 section.
