In addition, you will also get the printable PDF versions that is found in U.S. Customary Length Unit Conversion Puzzle
Objective: This activity tests students on converting between the different customary length units including inches, feet, yards, and miles.
Standard: This puzzle is aligned with the following fifth grade common core standard:
CCSS.Math.Content.5.MD.A.1—Convert among different sized standard measurement units within a given measurement system.
Included are two versions of a 4 x 4 unit conversion puzzle. To complete the puzzle the students must match up the equivalent customary system length units. For example, one piece will say 1 ft on one side so the student will match it up with the piece that says 12 in.
There are two versions of the puzzle included so you can differentiate amongst different ability levels. One puzzle does not have any units listed around the outside of the puzzle, making constructing the grid easier. The second puzzle repeats some of the values on the outside, challenging the students to use their inductive reasoning skills to complete the puzzle.
The puzzles are programmed in Flash, so you will have to a flash player on your computer or the students computer. Currently, it will not run on IPads or Macs as they don't have flash players.
There are three options to administer the computer versions puzzle:
1. Straight Computer Based - For this option you will have to distribute the folder containing the puzzles onto your students computers. THAT IS THE ONLY PREP WORK INVOLVED!!. Two version of the file are included, a swf fil e and exe file. The students will then run the puzzle on their computer and it will do the rest of the work including offering periodic checks and correcting them. A hard copy of the puzzle is included so that you can check the students progress on your own or help them out with specific pieces. The Roman numerals are included so that you can quickly reference the piece they need help on.
2. Computer and Hard Copy Mix - You can print out the puzzle and distribute the 16 pieces to individual students or a group of students. At the same time you can have the puzzle open on your smartboard or computer. The activity can then be done as a group or you can provide hints on your version on the computer.
3. Hard Copy of Puzzle Administration - The file also contains the PDF version of the puzzle. You can still simply cut out the pieces and distribute them to students if you are limited on or don't have access to computers.
